Successful completion of the Data Science Bootcamp of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG)

From April to December 2020, myBioma‘s bioinformatician Christian Jansen had the chance to participate in the FFG Data Science Bootcamp at St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences.

The bootcamp covered various topics ranging from planning and collecting study data, data preparation and modelling to the final evaluation and presentation of the results. Specifically, Christian conducted the first promising analyses for the upcoming biomarker study. For this purpose, various microbiome datasets from public databases were evaluated with the help of machine learning (ML) methods, and dimension reduction methods were used to improve the performance of the final models and to reduce the training and data effort, respectively.

During the bootcamp, different skills with ML methods were taught and valuable experience was gained for the upcoming studies. “Especially the concrete contacts to some of the best Austrian experts in the field of data science were incredibly enriching for me”, Christian said at the end of the bootcamp. In summary, the FFG Data Science Bootcamp was a great experience. Both, Christian and the entire myBioma team, are looking forward to a follow-up programme.
